Fabio Fognini's father reveals the worst part in playing Roger Federer
Fulvio Fognini watched live the Rolex Paris Masters third round match in November between his son Fabio and Roger Federer, who was making his first appearance in the tournament since 2015. In an interview to Tennis World Italia, Fulvio described the unpleasant feelings a player or his parent goes through when facing such a legend like the 20-time Grand Slam champion. 'It's bad to play against Federer', admitted the 65-year-old. 'Also because everyone cheers for him. You are in the player's box suffering and the other people constantly shout their name. Sometimes it's embarrassing.'
Asked if Fabio will play the eventual Davis Cup final stage in late November (in case Italy defeats India in February 2019), Fulvio replied: 'You have to be patient. Especially seeing how you get to November, what kind of schedule he has in his mind. It's not an easy decision. He never had this kind of deal, otherwise, he would have already stopped competing in it. The top players were always absent and with a good player and a bad player, you managed to win. Look at France. You have to give a shot at the new format.'
How did Fognini react to Marco Cecchinato's French Open final? 'They are friends, I do not think there is envy. They are constantly in touch, then it's true that Seppi has been the reference point for years. Not Cecchinato, who still gave a big motivation to Fabio. When Seppi cracked the top 20, many years ago, Fabio found a new motivation to improve. Now there are many other things, like his son, that calmed him down. He cannot change on a mental side, but now he thinks longer before doing a crazy thing.'
