Having Rafael Nadal in Davis Cup gives big advantage - Alex Corretja
In an interview to Radio Marca, Alex Corretja recalls Spain's 2000 win over Australia in the Davis Cup final. Corretja said: 'It was a very emotional moment, I exactly remember where I was. I was in the locker room waiting to see if Juan Carlos won or not his match because if he lost I had to enter the court to play the fifth point. What I ask myself now is why I did not watch the match point live! I was so focused that I watched it on television and then I came there one minute later for the ceremony. Juan Carlos achieved something historical but the key of all that year was how we worked as a team. I remember everything with a lot of emotion but also with a lot of pressure. We were very young, we were a team that had never won the Davis Cup for Spain and the abroad and local journalists were constantly asking us it. It was the opportunity of our life, we played at home, we had such a high responsability that sometimes we were getting nervous a little. We tried to isolate ourselves but every time we did it we were getting calls and messages from journalist and friends.'
'It's clear that the one of before was not normal. In 2000 we opened the streak, in 2003 we played another final lost in Australia and then the new generation with Rafa came, who is always a very big advantage to have in the team.'
