Johan van Herck named Belgium Fed Cup captain

Tennis - Johan van Herck has been named the captain of the Belgium Fed Cup team - making him the captain of the Belgian Fed Cup and Davis Cup teams. The 44-year-old Van Herck is a former player himself and has been leading the men's Davis Cup team since September 2011, according to The Fed Cup site.

Van Herck has led the Belgians to two Davis Cup finals - in 2015 and 2017. Both years, the Belgians ended on the losing side - to Great Britain in 2015 and to France in 2017. Van Herck replaces Dominique Monami as the Fed Cup captain and his first tie will be against France in February. France had defeated Belgium in 2018 and the Belgians will be hoping to gain some revenge for their 2018 loss. The Belgians defeated Italy in April to retain their place in the Fed Cup World Group for the second year in a row.

Van Herck's best ranking in singles came in 1997 when he reached No. 65 in the world. He reached the third round of the French Open in 1998, which was his best performance in a Grand Slam tournament. He also won 8 titles on the ATP Challenger Tour, between 1995 and 2000 and retired in 2001.

The Belgian team will be led by Elise Mertens, Alison van Uytvanck and Kirsten Flipkens and will be hoping to reach the final for the third time in their Fed Cup history, having won the event in 2001 and reaching the final in 2006. Belgium is currently ranked sixth in the Fed Cup rankings, two spots behind France.
