Kei Nishikori and Dominic Thiem add ATP 500 event to 2019 schedule

Dominic Thiem and Kei Nishikori have added a new tournament to their 2019 schedule. They are both committed to play the Erste Bank Open in Vienna from 19 to 27 October 2019. Nishikori made his first appearance ever in the Austrian event this year, and he reached the final losing to Kevin Anderson, who won his maiden ATP 500 title. Thiem lost to Nishikori in the quarter-finals, and the local hero will be back in 2019.

The Tournament Director Herwig Straka said: 'Kei Nishikori was extremely enthusiastic about both the tournament and the city of Vienna with its numerous attractions. The visit of the Vienna State Opera together with some other top players made a lasting impression on him, and he was also impressed by the great atmosphere during the matches inside the Stadthalle. I have never seen a player making his decision to enter next year’s event one day after the finals. Of course, we are delighted that Kei Nishikori will be present at the Erste Bank Open 500 in 2019.'

Commenting on Vienna switching from ATP 250 to 500 category back in 2015, Straka said: 'We worked hard for this and it worked out that we have been able to valorise the Erste Bank Open. We have been reaching new dimensions with the tournament taking place at Vienna’s Stadthalle. We were very happy that we could make this historical step', he concluded.
