Kerber gets ultimate German award, Boris Becker praises her

Wearing a long red outfit on Sunday night Angelique Kerber was named the German sportswoman of the year again. After a disappointing 2017 season, the world No. 3 is back at the top of tennis starting the year on a high note first with the Sydney International title, then the Australian Open semifinals and her third Grand Slam title in a career at Wimbledon defeating Serena Williams in a straight-set final. Kristina Vogel, who ended as second-ranked, said to Kerber: 'You are a role model for many people. You have shown a lot of willing. I think today the stage is of yours. Stay the way you are.'

The six-time Major winner Boris Becker said: 'You showed to all the critics that work, discipline and self-confidence are worth.'

Kerber, the Ironman world champion Patrick Lange and the hockey team, who won the world silver medal, are the 2018 athletes of the year. That's the results of the votes by 1,110 sports journalists.

Kerber is currently training hard ahead of the 2019 season that she will start at the Hopman Cup in Perth.
