Maria Sharapova unlikely to make a Roger Federer-like comeback, says Hingis

Martina Hingis is doubtful about Maria Sharapova being back at her highest level. A few weeks ago Russia's Tennis Federation chief Shamil Tarpischev said Sharapova can be back to the first ranking position, but Hingis does not have the same thoughts. 'I think that only Maria herself understands if she can comeback to her previous level. It's safe to say that it will be very difficult for her to do it. She is not becoming younger and it's unlikely that she is able to play at the age of 17 years when she won Wimbledon', said Hingis. 'There is an excellent example of Roger Federer, who was said four years ago that his time was gone. However, he was able to change his approach and now plays another tennis. For Maria, this journey will be tougher, because her tennis is physical. Will she be able to regain her previous shape? We will see', Hingis said on TV programme "Melting Ice" on Match TV, as quoted by Championat.

Hingis also commented on the 21-year-old Daria Kasatkina's potential: 'I know Daria Kasatkina well and I consider her a great talented player. She has a very smart tennis. She is not the biggest girl, but very powerful and physical, hitting very well the ball. I think she needs two or three more years to reach the peak of her form and get big wins. Also, I am close to her coach, so I know her well. I think that another champion would be useful to Russian tennis.'
