Perth-based Matt Ebden delighted to represent Australia at Hopman Cup
Rising Australian Matt Ebden admits it means so much to him to be able to represent Australia at the Hopman Cup in Perth.
Ebden, a Perth resident, came up big on the opening day of the Hopman Cup to help Australia earn a notable win over France.
The 31-year-old came from a set down to beat rising French star Lucas Pouille 3-6 7-6 (5) 6-2 in front of his family and friends.
The Frenchman broke the Australian in the sixth game of the first set before he served out for the opening set in the ninth game.
Ebden appeared to be on the verge of comfortably winning the second-set tie-break but then blew three consecutive set points before he converted his fourth set point to force a decider.
The Australian was 2-1 down in the third set when he broke Pouille twice in a row to win five games in a row and seal the win.
It gave Australia a 2-0 lead over France as Ashleigh Barty beat Alize Cornet prior to the Ebden and Pouille match.
"It means so much to be out here playing," Ebden said, per the AFP.
"There wasn't much rhythm until the second set, I was able to get a little bit more aggressive."
Ebden and Barty later lost the mixed doubles match to Pouille and Cornet.
Australia plays next Spain, which is represented by David Ferrer and Garbine Muguruza.
