Serena Williams: In the US, one in four women experience domestic violence

In an interview to Huffington Post, the 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams commented on the abuse that several Afro-American women face in their lives. 'In the US one in four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime and in almost every case, financial abuse also occurs,' said Serena. 'Every time I say this statistic out loud it shocks me — that one woman could be a friend, a family member, a colleague. We have to do better and get those numbers down. One of the most invisible forms of domestic violence is financial abuse. Abusers use finances as a weapon that keep victims trapped in toxic and dangerous relationships.'

Commenting on how black people have been perceived in the tennis world after Williams sisters' breakthrough on the Tour, DA Abrams, chief diversity and inclusion officer for the US Tennis Association, said: 'There’s certainly more diverse activity from an ethnic standpoint since they came on the scene. At junior tournaments at higher levels, they’re more diverse ethnically than they were in the past.'

Canada's Francoise Abanda said: 'I grew up watching the Williams sisters. I appreciate Venus, who is playing for so long and at a high level. They have really big power games and maximize it.'

Serena will start her new season at the Hopman Cup in Perth and will team up with Frances Tiafoe.
