TIU suspends Diego Matos due to corruption!
The 30-year-old Brazilian Diego Matos has been provisionally suspended from professional tennis by independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer Prof Richard H McLaren. The suspension applies with immediate effect and it is a result of the investigation from TIU on alleged breaches of the Tennis Anti-Corruption Program. The further details were not published and we are yet to see for how long he will be excluded from competition. Matos was in action until the very last week, competing at Cameron F2 Futures where he reached the quarter-final in singles and the final in doubles.
Matos never had a chance to compete on the ATP level and he is currently ranked 1209th in singles and 244th in doubles, never winning a Challenger match in singles or playing in the final in doubles. Thus, he has spent almost the entire career on the Futures Tour, winning one singles titles and additional 20 in doubles between 2008-2018. In fact, 2018 was his best season in terms of ranking but we are yet to see how serious the violation is and for how long he will be sidelined. Matos was away from the court between 2014-16 and he played only a couple of matches in 2017, entering 2018 from the rock bottom and forging his way towards the Top 300 for the first time in his career.
Over the last couple of months, TIU has banned Patricio Heras, chair umpires Anucha Tongplew, Apisit Promchai and Chitchai Srililai, Loveth Donatus, Gleb and Vadim Alekseenko, Christopher Diaz-Figueroa, Potito Starace and Daniele Bracciali, with Diego Matos being the latest player who has failed to follow the rules and stay on the right side like the majority of the tennis players who battle to earn some money and points on the lower-ranked events.
