Victoria Azarenka, Billie Jean King back new WTA rule changes

The two-time Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka and the WTA Founder Billie Jean King backed the WTA rule changes about maternity. Now a mother will have three years to return to the Tour using her special ranking. 'I am pleased to see these rule changes at the WTA Tour to continue to protect our players in their workplace and allow them to play at their highest level. The seeding of the players and the tournament draws will now be more accurate which will ultimately benefit the fans. The players can now return to the WTÁ Tour on their own terms and these new rules provide protections for their health, their family and their career,' King wrote on Twitter.

Speaking to AAP, Azarenka said: 'I was taking a big part in all those discussions so I'm very pleased about that. It's a very, very big step forward and we're going to continue to make sure that our sport and our tour is the pioneer in those kind of things. I hope we broke the stereotype that, if you have a kid, it should stop your career and I hope that it's not going to be the case just for tennis but all the sports and other jobs so that women can have their own dreams and own careers while having a family.'

Azarenka will start her new season at the ASB Classic in Auckland from where in 2018, she had to withdraw due to the custody battle with her former boyfriend for their son Leo.
