With Roger Federer as ambassador, Wilson set to be sold for a high price
Amer Sports, the maker of the iconic Wilson tennis rackets is set to have a change in ownership with Anta Sports Products Ltd-led Chinese investor group reaching the deal to buy the maker of Wilson, and Louisville Slugger baseball bats, as reported by Bloomberg. Roger Federer is the biggest face of Wilson, having a lifetime deal with the company.
Wilson reportedly wants to focus on expanding its market in Japan. Last year, Federer attended a Wilson Tennis event in Tokyo. Asia now becomes an important area of the world as Tokyo will host the 2020 Olympics. Through a statement, the Anta Sports Chief Executive Officer, Ding Shizhong, said: 'We are excited to bring these premium international brands and products to Chinese consumers, who increasingly seek high-end products with outstanding qualities and heritage in various niche and specialized sports segments.'
Heikki Takala, Amer Sports CEO, added: 'Under the ownership of the investor consortium, there is an opportunity to continue to deliver our strong sustainable profitable growth with further acceleration in our strategic priorities including soft goods, direct-to-consumer and China.'
Pete Sampras was a Wilson ambassador during his playing days. Aside from Federer these days, Venus and Serena Williams are also Wilson ambassadors. Federer has won 20 Grand Slam titles using Wilson rackets. In 2014, he switched to a 97' frame after having used a 90-inch frame for a long time.
