Annabel Croft: Dan Evans won’t be afraid of Roger Federer

Dan Evans overcame the Japanese Challenge of Tatsuma Ito in the Opening Round of the Australian Open to next face Roger Federer, who defeated Denis Istomin in straight sets.

Evans recently returned from a 12-month drugs ban in April last year but is looking to rediscover his form of old at this event, where he reached the Round of 16 in 2017.

According to Sky Sports pundit Annabel Croft, Evans would be fearless when he faces Roger Federer in Round 2.

“I think he has got a bit of a cheeky chappy, Artful Dodger kind of character out there on the court,” Croft told Eurosport.

“He is not going to be afraid. He has earned this and he is going to take the bull by the horns and really relish this opportunity to go up against Roger Federer.”

“There will be no pressure and he can just go for it.”

She also made an interesting comparison with the similarities between Federer and Evans.

“The way that he plays his tennis is modelled on Roger Federer. A single-handed backhand and great use of the sliced backhand.”

“Leon Smith at the Davis Cup was looking tapes of Federer and saying to Dan Evans ‘These are the things that you need to do as Federer does’.”

She added, “He definitely has modelled himself on that and it has paid a lot of dividends.”
