Cristobal Saavedra-Corvalan is suspended for two and a half years
The 28-year-old Chilean Cristobal Saavedra-Corvalan has been suspended for two and a half years and fined $8,000 following a Tennis Integrity Unit investigation. Cristobal had a chance to play an ATP match in Santiago back in 2010 and also a Davis Cup match in the same season but he spent the most of his career on the Futures Tour, competing in 600 matches on the entry level of professional tennis and winning nine titles from 22 finals. He was ranked inside the top-300 in both singles and doubles in 2011 but he never managed to make the next step and raise his game to become at least a regular player on the Challenger Tour, winning 10 Challenger matches and none since 2012!
Saavedra-Corvalan has spent the last couple of seasons outside the top-400 and he was involved in some suspicious matches, not competing since June 2017 and Turkey F23 Futures. In October that year, Cristobal was provisionally suspended after failing to comply with a series of requests for information from the TIU. A few weeks ago, disciplinary Hearing was held in Miami and it confirmed two and a half years suspension and $8,000 fine, keeping Saavedra-Corvalan away from the court until April 2020. With the changes in the ranking structure, the Chilean will hardly find the place under the tennis sun ever again and it will be interesting to see if he is capable of making one last push and doing things better once he returns. Saavedra-Corvalan was charged under Section F.2.b of the TACP which requires all Covered Persons to co-operate with TIU investigations into potential breaches of integrity:
“All Covered Persons must co-operate fully with investigations conducted by the TIU including giving evidence at hearings, if requested. No Covered Person shall tamper with or destroy any evidence or other information related to any Corruption Offense.”
