Gunter Bresnik gives Austrian captain permission to select Dominic Thiem

Austrian tennis star Dominic Thiem is expected to play the Davis Cup next week as his coach Gunter Bresnik has given the green light to Austrian captain Stefan Koubek about selecting the world No. 8.

Austria is set to host Chile on a clay surface in Salzburg in a Davis Cup qualifying round tie.

The winner of the tie will clinch a spot in the inaugural edition of the Davis Cup Finals.

Koubek also nominated Dennis Novak, Jurgen Melzer, Oliver Marach and Philipp Oswald.

However, having 2018 French Open runner-up Thiem available gives the hosts a much bigger chance of beating Chile.

Thiem's Australian Open campaign ended with a second round retirement.

The Austrian was 7-5 6-4 2-0 down to rising Australian star Alexei Popyrin when he decided to retire the match due to fatigue.

An exhausting first round five-set win against French Benoit Paire -- which ended in the early hours of Wednesday -- took a big toll on the Austrian as he didn't recover for his following match.

But fortunately, the 25-year-old appears to be ready to return to competitive action next week.

Thiem has featured in six ties so far in his career.

The Austrian star owns an 8-3 Davis Cup singles record and a 1-2 doubles record respectively.
