Novak Djokovic: 'Kei Nishikori is a fighter, lots of respect for him'

Novak Djokovic praised his next opponent Kei Nishikori. On Wednesday, they will face each other for the 18th time in career and the Serb leads head to head meetings 15-2. Nishikori only prevailed in the 2014 US Open and 2011 Basel semi-finals. Djokovic praised the 29-year-old for his five-set win over Pablo Carreno Busta.

'Kei won another marathon match,' said Djokovic. 'Congratulations to him for fighting back from two sets to love down and break down. He's a fighter. He's a very talented player. One of the quickest players on the tour. You know, hard worker. I have lots of respect for him. We did play here several times. We actually played in quarterfinals I think one year. You know, every year is different, so, you know, every match that you play against each other is different, so I expect him obviously to come out, to try something new. You know, I have beaten him many times that we played against each other in last couple of years and that we played on different surfaces. It was a couple of very close matches. Yeah, I expect a tough one.'

Nishikori has played three five-setters in the four matches he has played at the 2019 Australian Open. His win against Pablo Carreno Busta was the second time in the tournament, when he came down from two-sets-to-love down to win the match in the fifth. This was the fourth time in his career that had he had won a match after being two-sets-to-love down.
