Heather Watson reacts to shocking Andy Murray announcement

In a press conference at the Australian Open on Friday Heather Watson commented on Andy Murray's retirement from tennis this year.

Watson obviously was surprised to see the news: ‘That’s really sad to hear, especially because he’s been such a role model in tennis in general, especially in British tennis and he’s just been a huge supporter of female tennis as well. It’s sad because he would be leaving not on his own terms just because this is what life’s thrown at him and he has no choice. That’s quite annoying but I’m just grateful that I’ve been able to get to know him, share the court with him in the Hopman Cup a couple of times and at the Olympics. He’s an awesome person. Boys are going to fight for boys because that’s the field they’re in, girls will fight for girls. So to have a guy fighting for women’s rights is pretty cool.’

On Murray, Johanna Konta said: 'He literally left no stone unturned he became, I feel like he really maximised everything that he has and left no stone unturned to bring the best out of himself and not many athletes and people can say that they did that in their career and profession, they maximised and gave everything they had and that’s something as an athlete to look up to it makes me quite emotional because that’s a beautiful thing.’
