ITF announces 2019 Grand Slam Player Grants list, including promising stars

Established in 1986, the Grand Slam Development Fund serves to encourage the establishment of both junior and professional tournament circuits and give some lower-ranked and future stars the opportunity to improve the financial aspect of their game and seek higher goals and the ranking breakthrough. The ITF has revealed the names of 29 players from 20 countries who will receive the GSDF for 2019, with 14 men and 15 women earning $25,000 or $15,000 that will use them nicely in the current season.

Roberto Cid Subervi and Moez Echargui will try to keep the Dominican Republic and Tunisia on the tennis map after getting $12,500 each and there is a whole bunch of players who take $25,000, including Alexander Bublik, Yunseong Chung, Miomir Kecmanovic, Duck Hee Lee, Yibing Wu, Mikael Ymer and others. All of these guys are very young and they will spend the money wisely, getting the opportunity to train in some foreign country and hire a fitness coach, which is very important at this stage of their careers. Ivana Jorovic, Kaja Juvan, Katarina Zavtska and Elena Rybakina are among the women who get $25,000, looking to improve some elements in their game or to form a team that will help them to achieve the better ranking positions and the opportunity to play in the main draws at Grand Slams, the ultimate goal of every player from outside the top-100.

“I think the [Serbian and American] mentality is a lot different - it’s two different sides. For the first part of your career, where you learn stuff, the Serbian mentality is good. But then the more tactical standpoint, I think the US has the benefit,” said Miomir Kecmanovic who has qualified for the main draw at the Australian Open last week, losing in the opening round to Fernando Verdasco.
