Pat Cash: Djokovic tends to raise his level like Rafa does when necessary

Novak Djokovic has been a bit grumpy at the Australian Open, but according to Eurosport tennis expert Pat Cash, that is bad news for his opponents.

Djokovic came into the Australian Open as favourite to win the season-opening Grand Slam after ending the 2018 season as World No.1

The Serbian has been made to work till the quarter-finals in Melbourne, but his work was cut short after Kei Nishikori withdrew mid match due to injury. Djokovic needed four sets to get past Denis Shapovalov and Daniil Medvedev in his previous matches.

“Sometimes Novak gets through the early rounds of a tournament clean, but he’s lost a couple of sets here and came back,” Cash told Eurosport.

“He got in a little bit of a grump in his last match when he lost a set. But then boom, he could see Medvedev was getting a little bit slow, he’d done so much running and he’s a tall lanky kid who stands a long way back and Djokovic went right, that’s it, I’m going to keep moving you then boom, went straight through.”

“I don’t mind Novak getting in a little bit grump, I think it sharpens him up towards the end of the tournament.”

He tends to raise his level like Rafa does when necessary, he’s quite incredible that way.”
