Roger will always be Roger: Boris Becker praises Federer
In a column for Times of India, the six-time Major winner Boris Becker commented on the clash between old guys and next generation. Becker believes the Big three competitors are on the first row, but younger players can be protagonists as well. "After his injury woes, everybody wanted to see how Rafa did during the first week but he's playing and seeing the ball well", wrote Becker. "Roger will always be Roger. It's amazing how he comes back from the winter break and just plays some awesome tennis. He has not dropped a set and played great. Where Sascha is concerned, so far so good; he beat Alex Bolt easily on Saturday to make the fourth round. Novak had a bit of a wobble against Denis Shapovalov but is also through. So, the second week is lining up pretty nicely. I must say it's been a while since we've had a Grand Slam with so many interesting first-week matches."
On the women's side, Becker added: "I am surprised that Caroline Wozniacki is out. Maria Sharapova hasn't really played well since her comeback and this was pretty much the biggest win of her second innings". Simona Halep struggled initially; you could tell she hadn't been playing much lately but she a fighter. On Saturday, she beat Venus Williams to set up a fourth round clash against Serena. It's amazing to see some of the younger players like young Russian-American Amanda Anisimova who beat Aryna Sabalenka. What a player! And she's just 17 years old."
