Tsitsipas recalls when Baghdatis lost Aus Open final to Roger Federer
In an interview to The Age Stefanos Tsitsipas recalled when Marcos Baghdatis reached the 2006 Australian Open final losing to Roger Federer in a straight-set final. Tsitsipas was just eight years old at the time and he and his country felt very proud for the Cypriot. “It was a big storm in Greece", Tsitispas admitted. "I don’t really remember that well the fourth round or the quarters, or whatever. I remember the finals. Everyone was watching. Everyone. That was every inspiring to see. Around that age I started playing tennis. It made me love the sport even more – having faith and maybe doing something similar one day. Like him.”
Commenting furthermore on his relationship with Baghdatis, Tsitsipas added: “We’re really good friends. Especially now he’s giving me tips, trying to help me as much as he can. It’s really nice to have him next to me because I’ve been idolising him my whole life. I’ve never really thought of him being so close to me. That would be the coolest thing ever. He’s close with me. We even arranged a couple of times to play doubles together this year so it’s nice.”
On his passion for photography, Tsitsipas concluded: “I enjoy doing it. I consider it a hobby. I think film making is something extraordinary … you have a voice. You create your own story. I really feel like I can discover myself from film making and photography. It’s a great way of expressing myself.”
