Dominic Thiem set to be back on Tour after illness - Here is where

Dominic Thiem is already on his way to Buenos Aires. The Austrian player flew with his coach Gunter Bresnik to Argentina from Vienna on Thursday. Last year Thiem won his first title of the year just in Buenos Aires defeating Aljaz Bedene in a straight-set final. Thiem then also triumphed in Lyon and St. Petersburg. At the time Bresnik wasn't there as the fitness trainer Alex Stober was taking care of Thiem. He would then lose to Fernando Verdasco in the Rio Open quarter-finals. This year the Austrian will be back in Brazil, trying to win the title for the second time after 2017. Thiem will not play in the Acapulco/Dubai week. Thiem may have met in the aeroplane with Maximilian Marterer, who retired from the Cordoba Open, and Germany's Davis Cup captain Mikhail Kohlmann.

"For me, he is fit enough to play a match next week", said Thiem's agent and coach Gunter Bresnik. "He has one week left and he will play on Wednesday or Thursday next week. He looked as good in recent days, but we have to wait and see what happens when he plays a match because he did less or nothing for several weeks. I cannot say he can play great."

Thiem's tournaments schedule for the 2019 season has not been revealed yet, but after Indian Wells and Miami, he is committed to play the Monte Carlo Masters. "Now the most important thing is to have a good start. There is still a lot to do."

Thiem wants to improve his results on grass courts and maybe reach the Wimbledon final as Milos Raonic did at 2016 Wimbledon, losing to Andy Murray. Asked if the Canadian is one of the favourites to win the 2019 Wimbledon title, the expert David Law, speaking on The Tennis Podcast, said: "He’s in the bunch behind the absolute favourite for Wimbledon which is Novak Djokovic. Roger Federer is with Rafael Nadal probably next I would say. I still find it quite curious how Raonic through in that performance against Lucas Pouille."
