Miami Open - Entry List: Serena Williams seeks ninth title, Wozniacki IN
All the top-75 WTA players have committed to the Miami Open from 20 to 30 March. Sloane Stephens is the defending champion. Last year, the American defeated Jelena Ostapenko in a straight-set final. It will be an important tournament for Victoria Azarenka, who is the defending semi-finalist. Azarenka won three titles at the Miami Open in 2009, 2011 and 2016. Three years ago, the Belarusian completed the Sunshine Double as she conquered the Indian Wells crown too.
Caroline Wozniacki has also committed to play. Last year, she was verbally abused by the crowd during her opening-round loss to Monica Puig. Serena Williams will seek a ninth historical title: she won her first title here in 2002 and won her last title in 2015. Her sister Venus triumphed in 1998, 1999 and 2001. Johanna Konta is the 2017 champion. Like Rafael Nadal on the men's side, Maria Sharapova also lost all the five finals played in the tournament (2005, 2006, 2011, 2012 and 2013). Anna-Lena Friedsam is the only player who used protected ranking to join the main draw field.
Serena spoke about her legacy in tennis: 'I just feel like I've won a lot, and that's cool. I feel like for me, it means more to stand up for everything I believe in, like, all the fighting I did for equal prize money, equal play time on courts, just believing in yourself, all the stuff I do off the court. I feel that's what I would love people to kind of relate to, especially younger players. Tennis is great, but for me, it's about opening doors for the next generation.'
