Nao Hibino explains why Naomi Osaka isn't a pure Japanese player

In an interview, Nao Hibino explained why she doesn't have a close relationship with the two-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka. The Japanese player does not visit her country too often and she lives pretty much in America. Hibino said: "To be honest, we feel a bit of distance from her because she is so physically different, she grew up in a different place and doesn’t speak as much Japanese. It’s not like Kei (Nishikori), who is a pure Japanese player.”

Speaking on Channel Nine Australia, the commentator Tony Jones said: “She’s almost reserved, the way she’s walking around that court at the moment there. Thinking to herself, ‘What should I be doing?’ And what she should be doing is just enjoying the moment.”

Having success at the highest tennis level has always been a childhood dream of Osaka: "My goal was of course to be the best tennis player that I can be. I don't think everyone else can follow my path, everyone has their own paths. That's what makes life interesting."

Jim Courier said: "I think we needed a sporting final, particularly on an arena that was named after Rod Laver, not just because of her achievements but because of how she conducts herself, and we certainly got that tonight."
