Naomi Osaka deserves to be world No. 1, says Elina Svitolina
In a press conference in Doha, Elina Svitolina commented on the balance of women's tennis and Naomi Osaka holding the first ranking position. Svitolina was a world No. 1 in 2017 and she said: "I think it's very interesting who can win a Grand Slam, gonna become No. 1, and I think that's how it has to be. You know, Naomi, she deserves to be there. She won two slams. That's why she's No. 1. She played some great tennis. She beat some great players. She's been very consistent at the slams. It's, I mean, fully deserved to be there. I think it's very interesting and motivates every player to work hard to improve their game. That's why it's very interesting because there are lots of good matches and tight battles. Yeah, it's tennis, women's tennis, and everyone has a chance to play really good. You know, I think this is great and brings the best of us."
Svitolina was also asked if she has been affected by the weather in Doha as a lot of players have been dealing with illness. "Well, it's, as I said, it's tricky, but, you know, it's tennis. It's two players in the same conditions. You have to be ready for this. You have to adjust. Every tournament is very different conditions. Some are flying, some are, you know, the ball is just stopping, so you have to adjust. And this is a part of tennis."
