New Haven leaves WTA Calendar, replaced by a new Chinese event
The Connecticut Open of New Haven left the WTA calendar. The outdoor hard-court tournament will be replaced by a Chinese city called Zhengzhou, that will host a Premier event starting on September 9 just after the US Open. Through a press release, it was said: “After 21 years of hosting some of the biggest names in women’s professional tennis, New Haven will no longer stage a WTA Premier tournament after the Connecticut Open sold its sanction on the WTA calendar.”
The Tournament Director Anne Worcester added: “It has been an amazing 21-year run for women’s professional tennis in New Haven, and we are truly grateful to all the fans, volunteers, players, media and sponsors involved.”
Chris Shackelton, Chairman of the TFC, said: “Our non-profit foundation is grateful to have had the opportunity to positively impact Connecticut. As we look to the future, we will remain actively involved in New Haven, leveraging our resources and strong partnerships with Yale University and Yale-New Haven Health, to invest in valuable programs and events for the benefit of our State and local community.”
The WTA CEO Steve Simon concluded: “The Connecticut Open has been one of the most beloved tournaments on the WTA Tour for 21 years. We want to recognize and extend our appreciation to the Connecticut Open’s dedicated team and fanbase for their years of commitment and passion for women’s tennis.”
