Prajnesh Gunneswaran: I honestly believe I can be top 20 in the world

Prajnesh Gunneswaran is presently the Top ranked India and is knocking on breaking into the Top-100, ranked at No.102 on the ATP Charts. He will be leading the Indian charge against Italy for their Davis Cup Tie and is upbeat about it.

"It has taken me a long time to get here," Prajnesh said. "I'm happy I stuck to it, fought through and didn't give up. I'm very glad with where I'm today. Not content, though."

Struggling with injuries, he thought of quitting the sport after giving it one last shot late in 2015. “It was the toughest phase for me," Prajnesh said.

“I couldn't play, seeing all those years of effort going to waste. I was hoping that I would get to play one more time. I kept saying, 'OK, I'm going to wait three more months; then three more months; then three more months'. And that went on for nearly five years. I just kept fighting,” he says.

He further added, "I always had the drive. I always believed I was capable of doing something special in tennis."

Speaking about a change in his game style, "Over a period of time as you play more, you know what you really have to work on. That's how I came to the conclusion that I had to be more aggressive, because I always felt I used to get really tired. One of the factors for that was not having enough endurance, which I worked on a lot. But then there were other players who had as much as my tank but who were able to sustain a lot more. So I was like, why are they able to and why not me?

"So then, I made a conscious decision to become more aggressive. It translated to me attacking more balls, hitting more winners, spending a little less energy on the court every match. And that led to me winning more matches on the trot than before," he says.
