'Roger Federer was my idol, I would love to see him in Davis Cup' - Pique
Roger Federer will not play the 2019 Davis Cup as Switzerland didn't reach the finals stage but the International Tennis Federation had asked the Swiss player to play and his country would get a wild card invitation for the final draw. In an interview to Marca, the Kosmos Tennis investor Gerard Pique said: "I did not have the opportunity, but I tried. He was my childhood idol and I met him nine or ten years ago. I spoke with Tony (Godsick, his agent) and I told me that it would be a pleasure to count on Federer if Switzerland qualifies."
Asked if the Davis Cup success depends on Rafael Nadal's appearance, Pique added: "We do not want our Davis success depends on who plays or not. Davis is a countries event and the most important things are federations, teams, players. Obviously, the more best players compete the better, but it should not be about it."
Pique also spoke about his love for tennis: "My father was the Real Club de Tenis of Barcelona member and I went seeing the Conde de Godo matches for many years. As a kid I was playing tennis and football, but I picked football because I was better at it. I still play when I can and I am not bad, I win my matches. Since I started playing in a professional way it turned difficult to travel over the tournaments, but I could always go at the French Open, US Open... Now I am the Kosmos investor and tennis is our focus. I do not mean the sport as a way to make money but to make people enjoy."
"Madrid was chosen as the host after a long debate with Kosmos and ITF. We chose Madrid because it was close to Barcelona, next to ITF, it has big facilities... Then we are open to other hosters, we will list the pros and cons and we will decide."
