WTA Budapest: Iga Swiatek destroys Olga Danilovic. Cirstea and Blinkova win
In one of the youngest matches on the Tour so far in 2019, a qualifier Iga Swiatek scored a dominant 6-3, 6-0 win over Olga Danilovic in 63 minutes, scoring the second win over the Serb after a tight one in Melbourne in January. The Pole had the strings of the match firmly in her hands, dropping ten points in eight service games and saving both break points she faced to mount the pressure on the other side of the net and wait for a chance on the return. Those opportunities had to come, with Danilovic landing only 43% of the first serve in and losing the last seven games after four breaks she suffered.
Iga saved those two break points in the fifth game and she never looked back after breaking Olga in the following game, holding at love at 5-3 to secure the opener and racing towards the finish line in set number two for the place in the last 16. Kateryna Kozlova ousted the 7th seed Johanna Larsson 6-1, 6-1 in 51 minutes, giving her serve away once but outplaying the Swede completely in the return games for six breaks of serve and a clear path towards the second round. A qualifier Tereza Smitkova toppled another qualifier Ysaline Bonaventura 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 53 minutes, overcoming a sluggish start to dominate in the rest of the match.
Smitkova fired ten aces and she got broken twice, settling into a nice rhythm after the opening set to cross the finish line first, hoping for more of the same in the rest of the week. Sorana Cirstea had to work hard against Anna Bondar, prevailing 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in two hours and 11 minutes thanks to the more efficient performance on the return. Bondar won the opening set after fending off all seven break points before a high-quality second set that offered only one break point for Cirstea that she converted for a 6-3. In the decider, Sorana created ten break chances and seized three to move over the top and kick off the action with a triumph.
