Sampras reveals the record that Federer, Djokovic, Nadal will never break
Pete Sampras is considered to be reclusive, and rarely gives interviews. The 14-time Grand Slam champion last attended a tournament at the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells last year for the men's quarter-final match between Roger Federer and Hyeon Chung and at the time, had said that the current tennis players take care more of their bodies.
Now, during an event held by the International Hall of Fame, Sampras said that no one will be able to achieve the Calendar Grand Slam twice like Rod Laver did in 1962 and 1969. "He's the most humble champion I've ever been around. His records are never going to be touched. Those two Grand Slams will never happen," said Sampras, who led the list of most number of Grand Slams won by a man (14), before Roger Federer (20), Rafael Nadal (17) and Novak Djokovic (15) eclipsed him.
At the Australian Open, Laver said that the calendar Grand Slam might happen again. He also indicated a key to make a difference in the best moments: "I think concentration is probably the most important part of the game when you really boil it down."
In an interview to Express, the seven-time Grand Slam winner Mats Wilander commented on Roger Federer's decision to play the French Open again for the first time since 2015. The Swede has often criticized the Swiss for taking a long break in the middle of the clay season in the past, and now said he was looking forward to seeing Federer again there. “I was very surprised to see him not enter the last two years. That’s not the point. He owes it to the fans to play all four majors. Every player on the professional tour has to play all four majors," said Wilander from the Australian Open, Melbourne, where he worked as a commentator for Eurosport. "There are times when players haven’t played all four majors because they have been injured and we’ve missed them. He needs to play in the French Open because he owes it to tennis and I think he has realised that.”
