Simona Halep splits with coach Thierry Van Cleemput after trial period
There is no time to rest for Simona Halep. Barely 24 hours after her loss to Elise Mertens in the Doha final, the Romanian met the reporters in a press conference at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship. Halep wants to go far in the tournament also because she is the brand's ambassador. Assessing her recent weeks, the Romanian said: "Two good weeks: Fed Cup and Doha. Yeah, I feel good. I feel happy. A little bit tired, but it's normal. I just arrived. Yeah, I'm looking forward actually to start with this one and see how it's going to go. No expectations."
Halep also revealed she already split with her coach Thierry Van Cleemput after a short trial period. They trained together in Bucharest earlier this month, then the Belgian followed her in Doha. "So we tried for one week and it's finished. We decided to stop because we are not a good fit together. He's a good person, a very nice person, but on court the chemistry is not there. We couldn't fit each other tennis-wise. Personally, he is a very nice person. We are friends", said Halep as quoted by WTA.
Asked if not being the world No. 1 now makes her feel more freedom, Halep added: "I didn't have the pressure before when I was No. 1. I handle it very well. So no, I don't think. It's the same thing. Doesn't matter the ranking in this point of the year. In the end, yeah, it matters."
