Stefanos Tsitsipas recalls when he almost died
Through his official YouTube Channel, the 20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas recalled when he came closer to death in 2016 while at sea. The waves were very big at the time and Tsitsipas felt he could have died in a very short time. “It was the worst sensation I ever felt," said Tsitsipas. “I remember drowning, that feeling of dying,” he said.
Luckily, in the end, Tsitsipas's father managed to save his life.
Meanwhile, Tsitsipas's mother, Yulia, commented on Stefanos's beginnings in the game: "Stefanos is our first son and, as we were both playing tennis, in some ways we introduced him to the discipline, but as soon as he had a right age we made him subscribe to a club in order to take lessons. His coach did a great job, he managed to create a very close relationship with my son, which is not easy as Stefanos is pretty shy, who loves animals and humour. So they got together for seven years. But since his coach did not want to travel on a consistent basis, Apostolos started following him and he continued in a great way what he did, without putting expectations on him."
Tsitsipas also spoke about the difficulties of playing tennis in Greece. "Finding a quality hitting partner was always rare, and I noted that in general the attitude and motivation were not ideal to compete. And it was also pretty costly."
