Wrist injury forces in-form Gael Monfils to withdraw from Marseille

French tennis star Gael Monfils has pulled out of the Open 13 Provence due to a wrist injury.

Monfils, seeded at No. 7 in the Marseille main draw, was drawn to meet Czech Jiri Vesely in the first round.

The Frenchman has played in Marseille eight times so far in his career.

The 32-year-old's best ever run in Marseille came four years ago, when he fell just short of winning it all at the tournament.

Back then, Monfils was edged out by fellow compatriot Gilles Simon in a tight Marseille final.

The Frenchman withdrawing from Marseille means he won't be playing his third tournament in as many weeks.

Monfils has played lots of tennis in the past two weeks, having made deep runs at the Sofia Open and ABN AMRO World Tennis Tournament respectively.

The 32-year-old made the Sofia semi-final just over a week ago before he won it all in Rotterdam last week.

Monfils will be replaced in Marseille by fellow compatriot Gregoire Barrere.

Barrere, 25, fell just short of making it past the Marseille qualifying event as he lost to Egor Gerasimov in the final round.

Yet, he will make his Marseille main draw debut this week when he takes on Vesely.

Meanwhile, it remains to be seen will world No. 23 Monfils be ready to return to action at next week's Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
