Younger players will have to wait for Federer, Nadal retirement - Caujolle

In an interview to Yahoo, the Marseille Open Tournament Director Jean-Francois Caujolle commented on the mix between the Next Generation and the legends. Caujolle, a former Paris Masters Tournament Director, warned it will take some time. "Next Gens are young", he said. "And what lacks to young guys, by definition, is the maturity, smartness and a little more of consistency. Beyond Grand Slams, we see that they can have great weeks in the 250s, 500s or 1000s, but we also see that they can lose in the first round of each of this tournament's category. What lacks is a general level. They have a top 10 potential - some of them are there and they are on the door - and they can beat anybody. Okay. But in the Grand Slams, that's another problem.

Because it's a different tennis, the best of five sets. You need to be at your full physical abilities. Besides Nadal, who was pretty amazing on this aspect, the other players got their full fitness only after. And they also have to understand the work you need to do to get it. I am not surprised by this situation. Hyeon Chung, who has a lot of physical issues and injuries, may be the best player and he is able to go far in the five-set tournaments. He also reached last year's Australian Open semifinals. So for me there are really two Tours, two tennis: there are ATP players and Grand Slam winners like for example Stan Wawrinka who is the prototype of an amazing players for a long time, with an unbelievable physical strength. Andy Murray was a prototype too. Players of the next generation will mature and will get physically tougher and stronger in the Grand Slams. But until there are Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, I do not see a lot of people prevailing. They will have to wait the end of their careers."
