Gerard Pique reveals private conversation with Novak Djokovic
In an interview to Marca, the FC Barcelona defender Gerard Pique commented on the chances to see Novak Djokovic playing the Davis Cup finals in November. Serbia was drawn in the same group as France and Japan, but Djokovic is likely to miss the event as it takes place at the end of the season. "It depends on him. I met him in London in 2016 and the last time we met each other was during the ATP Finals in November. As a president of the player's council, I went through doubts and I faced them. I told him that the ATP and ITF need to work together to create big events as the Davis Cup should be. There is still a lot of time left and, obviously, he could play", said Pique, a Kosmos Tennis investor.
Is the tennis world more complex than football? "They are two complex sports. Tennis has ATP and ITF but football has UEFA, FIFA, Clubs Federation... I think, and this is my opinion, that in tennis, players have more power than football to fight for some things. But distraction and interests in both sports are similar."
"I am surprised for the good welcome that the project had from fans and endorsements. I am looking forward to November so that fans could reunite in Madrid and enjoy the experience. Because it will not be just tennis, but a sports festival. Besides watching matches you can enjoy several activities around Madrid thanks to the work done with the city, municipality, the Spanish Federation and the Madrid tennis federation."
