2019 ATP Indian Wells - Prize Money: Roger Federer, Nadal seek big cheques
The BNP Paribas Open of Indian Wells puts more than $8 million at stake. The winner takes $1,354,000, while the finalist earns almost around the half of it, $686,000. The semifinalist guarantees himself $354,000. $182,000 each for the quarter-finalists, $91,000 for the fourth round losers, $48,000 for the third round losers, $26,000 for the second round. Just playing in the main draw guarantees you $16,000. The defending champion Juan Martin del Potro is missing. Last year the Argentinean player defeated Roger Federer in an epic three-set final to win his maiden Masters 1000 title.
Federer is making his 18th appearance ever in Indian Wells. He first played there in 2001 losing to Nicolas Kiefer in a three-set first round match. The Basel native won five titles (2004, 2005, 2006, 2012 and 2017). He had his first training session on Monday evening. His coach Severin Luthi came back to Switzerland and it's now Ivan Ljubicic to lead Federer, who is coming from winning his 100th career-title at the Dubai Open. The Basel native is set to open his campaign this weekend.
In an interview to Irozhlas, the former world No. 8 Radek Stepanek praised Roger Federer on winning his 100th career-title in Dubai. Stepanek coached Novak Djokovic for a few months in early 2018.
On Federer being ten titles away from breaking Jimmy Connors's 109 crowns record, Stepanek said: "Roger is sure to pass him. When I was on the plane, I congratulated him. It's not about just winning 100 titles but how he inspires people on how it looks so easy. But it's not like this because behind there is an unbelievable hard work and good decisions. It shows the consistency of his game and that he is still a legend and probably the best player that our sport has ever seen. I played 16 matches against him and two finals."
