Acapulco TD explains plan to become a Masters 1000 tournament

The Mexican Open in Acapulco continues to be one of the biggest attractions on the Tour bringing a lot of top players in the field since 2014 when the surface was switched from clay to hard. Rafael Nadal competed this year there as well as did Alexander Zverev and John Isner. Among the main requirements to become a Masters 1000 tournament, the venue will need to have a central court with a seating capacity of 10,000. The stadium currently has 9,977 seats. "The idea is to keep growing as most as possible within the facilities we have now. We have an agreement to sign with Princess for a second stadium that would be put in place within a couple of years," said Alejandro Burillo, director of Grupo Pegaso. 

Once the new stadium will be completed, a process to upgrade its category may start. "We are ready to be a Masters. We know that it depends on the other nine tournaments if one loses its spot you can aspire to (replace it), and the plan is to be ready for that time," said the Tournament Director Raul Zurutuza. "I think we have all the tools to make it happen. The facility does not worry me because it's okay."

Nadal lost in the pre-quarter-finals in Acapulco to Nick Kyrgios in a three-set entertainer on Wednesday. The Spaniard, who was the top seed in the draw, had quite a few things to tell about his opponent, including calling him out for lack of respect
