ATP Announces 2020 calendar, Australian Open to start one week later!
The 2020 provisional ATP Calendar has been announced and there are several changes. The ATP Cup gets re-introduced on the schedule and is likely to feature all the best players. The new event, that was last played in Dusseldorf (Germany) in 2012, will take place from 3 to 12 January over three Australian cities (Brisbane, Sydney and one still unknown). Adelaide will be back on the tour as an ATP 250 event prior to the Australian Open, and in the same week also the Auckland Open takes place. ATP Cup lasting nine days means that the Australian Open will take a place a week later than usual, starting on January 20, in order to give players a proper rest. The Pune Open will take place just after the Australian Open in the same week as Montpellier (hard) and Cordoba (clay). Sofia, that was played in February from 2016 to 2019, will move to late September in the same week as Chengdu and Zhuhai. European will be able to play in their continent for one more week now, as prior to Sofia, Metz and St. Petersburg take place.
The Antalya Open, that takes place on the grass just prior to Wimbledon, is set to be replaced by Monza (Italy), Sweden or other eventual places. Now between Miami and Monte Carlo events there will just be a two-week gap and not three like this year. Davis Cup qualifiers will take place in early March prior to Indian Wells. The Tokyo Olympic Games will take place in late July and players will be able to rest for one week before the Rogers Cup in Canada. ATP Finals may take place in London for the last time, as from 2021 to 2025 new cities, including London, are among the candidates. Madrid, Rome and Shanghai - that all tried to become an 11-day event featuring a 96-player draw - will have the same format per now.
