Fitness trainer reveals key behind Roger Federer, Stan Wawrinka's longevity

In an interview to Le Matin, the fitness trainer Pierre Paganini explained the reasons behind Stan Wawrinka and Roger Federer not suffering major injuries for most of their careers except the last years. "They rarely got injured because one of the key things we do on the fitness preparation is the recovery. I always make a plan with Stan", said Paganini. 'That's why I am a part of his success. We do not have a too heavy schedule. After a course of tournaments, we do some fitness blocks, three or four times a year, so that he can be fit physically and mentally. When you get injured, you are under pressure. The main thing is not to allow it to happen. It's essential in a sport where you never stop, it's an ongoing season. If you do not make a proper plan throughout the year, the risk of getting injured is pretty high. The secret is to handle everything in a smart way, preparing at your best for the future. Every year, Stan needs to ask himself: 'What's the goal for the season? How much will it take to get it? He needs to work in a long term and focus on the time being. A high level player plays at least 70 matches a year and matches can last hours. This is what your preparation is about. Stan is very powerful physically. Stan's goal is not the one of running a marathon or being the fastest. It's about speed and reaction."

Both Federer and Wawrinka underwent knee surgeries, respectively in 2016 and 2017. The three-time Major winner concluded: "With him, you rarely feel tired or bored. You always move, but we also have funny sessions."
