I would have liked Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic to win Marseille - Caujolle
In an interview with Marseille's Open13 website, the event Tournament Director Jean-Francois Caujolle reflected on the many years of the event. "It may be surprising but I would have liked a Becker/Stich final, but they lost twice along the way. It would have been funny and back in the day, there were several German television channels. Obviously, I liked the latest clash between Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Gael Monfils, two amazing players, (and) the match between (Gilles) Simon and Gael was very intense too! Then, there are Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal who did not win here. But it's easy to speak about it. Obviously, I would have liked to have them on my list, but they did not win, simple as that. Also, Djokovic lost against Simon once in the second round and then in the semi-finals against Tsonga who played one of his best matches. Nadal lost to Arnaud (Clement)."
Caujolle indicated Dominic Hrbaty's three-set final win in 2004 over Robin Soderling as the most surprising outcome. "Without any doubt. It was one of the strongest matches. Hrbaty, he recollected, had lost the first set then on 5-4 in the second set he suddenly asked to stop the match to go in the locker room due to a shoe issue. He added, "Then there was a second pause (on the match) on 30-all again. Soderling got distracted, made a double fault, a forehand unforced and got crazy."
Stefanos Tsitsipas won the title in Marseille this year. The Greek defeated Mikhail Kukushkin in the final. It was his second ATP title after the 2018 Stockholm Open.
