Indian Wells: Elina Svitolina survives Gavrilova test to reach R16
The women placed in the second half of the singles draw played their third-round matches on Sunday. The day first saw the second seed Simona Halep defeat Kateryna Kozlova 7-6, 7-5 while Serena Williams lost the opening set before retiring from her match against Garbine Muguruza with a viral illness. Here are the other results of the day:
Seventh seed Kiki Bertens ended Briton Johanna Konta's aspirations in the event with a determined 7-6, 6-4 win. The opening set tie-break ended 12-10 with both players keen to put themselves ahead in the match. However, the Dutch player was a little too consistent for Konta on the day. Bertens will play the 20th seed Muguruza in the pre-quarter-finals.
Eighteenth seed Qiang Wang caused a minor upset with a win over the 16th seed Elise Mertens in their match. The Chinese player needed three sets – two of which were decided in the tie-breaks – to score her win, three minutes short of the three-hour mark. Next up for her is 18-year-old Bianca Andreescu who took an easier path into the round-of-16. The Canadian had no troubles in her match against Stefanie Voegele, beating the Swiss player 6-1, 6-2 inside of an hour, in 56 minutes.
Sixth seed Elina Svitolina wrapped up a gritty win against Daria Gavrilova in straight sets 7-5, 6-4. It was not a clean performance by any means with both women being inconsistent throughout the match. Svitolina awaits the winner between Jennifer Brady and Ashleigh Barty (who are currently tussling on-court), and regardless of who wins that match, the Ukrainian will have a tough time tackling her then opponent.
Marketa Vondrousova backed up her second-round upset of 2018 Indian Wells finalist Daria Kasatkina with another upset, of that of the 22nd seed Jelena Ostapenko. The 19-year-old Czech dropped the first set to the Latvian but regrouped herself to claim a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win in two hours and two minutes. In the fourth round, Vondrousova will face another seed in the world no. 2 Halep. Will she able to complete a hattrick of upsets in the tournament?
