Insider explains why Rafael Nadal opened tennis center in Mexico

In an interview to Marca, Tomas Prieto, director of the tennis programmes at the Rafa Nadal Academy, commented on the opening of the new tennis centre named after the 17-time Major winner that happened on Monday, February 18 in Cancun, Mexico. 'We have been working here for two months so that it opens on Monday', said Prieto.

On how people have been reacting to the news, Prieto added: 'For the name he has, they feel admiration and surprise for the project we are creating. It may be the first project of many ones. The Rafa Nadal Academy is more focused on competitive players who want to become professionals and study at the same time. It's more about the holidays. Giving people a chance to enjoy the amazing resort and play tennis. The training method is similar to the one we follow in the Academy, which was discovered by Toni with Rafa. Training individually, considering the player's condition, the mental and physical part, the school duties, which for Rafa is very important. So you can shape the player and the person.'

How involved will Nadal be in the Academy once he ends his tennis career? 'I do not know to what extent. He is involved in all these projects and I started since the beginning at the Academy and I am committed for two or three more years. Rafa wants to have people who know the Rafa Nadal Academy training method.'

Will a new Nadal come out from the Academy? 'It's a complicated question. We try to make many guys become professionals, but I do not know it they will be like Rafa."

Nadal has withdrawn from Indian Wells semifinal against Roger Federer due to a knee injury.
