Post Rafael Nadal era won't be easy for Spanish tennis, says Alex Corretja
In an interview to Marca, the former world No. 2 Alex Corretja commented on how Spanish tennis will do once the 17-time Major winner Rafael Nadal retires. Ahead of the Australian Open, Corretja, an Eurosport commentator, said: 'We will keep having players but going through the post Rafa era will be tough. But it happened also with other countries like Germany, with Steffi (Graf) and (Boris) Becker, United States, with (Pete) Sampras and (Andre) Agassi, or Sweden. The post Nadal time woll not be simple because any comparison with coming up players will literally be impossible.'
On the tennis next generation, Corretja added: 'At the end of the last season we saw a group of young guys like Khachanov, Coric and Tsitsipas. I believe that this year everything will be more balanced because the good ones keep being good but the guys who are behind are at a high level. In 2018 the favourites reached the fourth round and had no danger to lose. This time it's different.'
Corretja worked with Andy Murray and Albert Ramos in the past. Will he be back coaching on the Tour? 'It's complicated to be with a player all the time. I got offers from top 10, Grand Slam winners, but when you have a family and four children the priorities are others.'
