Roger Federer has a tough draw in Indian Wells, says pundit

Speaking on Sky Sport, the former world No. 39 Laura Golarsa previewed the upcoming match between Roger Federer and Peter Gojowczyk in Indian Wells. The Swiss makes his debut at this year's BNP Paribas Open eight days after winning his 100th career-title in Dubai. "The German is a solid player, Federer played well in Dubai but first round matches are always particular here", said Golarsa. "He'd rather face Gojowczyk than Seppi even though they are two similar players. Federer is playing well, he found his best tennis again but I do not want to say too much as it's still early. Federer has a tough draw, he would face Wawrinka next and then Fognini."

On Marco Cecchinato losing to Albert Ramos in the opening round, Golarsa added: "He can definitely improve. He is suddenly at the top level, maybe in an unexpected way. He is getting established, he played well on clay again winning an ATP title a few weeks ago and now he needs to face higher level opponents on hard. He has to do something more. A little bit like Thiem, they have a similar game with the one-handed backhand. Now Cecchinato is world No. 16, not 70 like 12 months ago, needs to do more and I think he can do it looking at his gamestyle."

On Novak Djokovic playing doubles with Fabio Fognini, Golarsa concluded: "He had a funny doubles match but also an important one to get the match rhythm play. Fognini because he did not get the results he hoped to clay and Djokovic because he had not played for a while. They faced quality opponents like Chardy and Raonic who hit a strong serve. Fabio hasn't an easy opponent, his opponent is playing well, won matches while he is not coming from too many matches. With Fabio you never know, let's see how he heads into the match. You need to be careful in those first matches because players didn't compete in too many matches lately."
