Serena Williams opens up about losing her sister
Serena Williams has opened up about the devastating murder of her sister while discussing gun violence in a new web series.
Williams recalled her own personal experience in a sit down interview with twelve year old youth activist Naomi Wadler on Ellen DeGeneres backed series ‘DiversiTea’.
“I was affected personally by gun violence; my sister unfortunately passed from that,” Williams explained.
“People are really talking about it now because it’s happening more widespread but it’s been affecting our community for years.”
Williams’ older sister Yetunde Price was murdered on 14 September 2003 at the age of 31. She was shot while sitting in a passenger seat of an SUV driven by her partner Rolland Wormley in Compton, California.
Unlike Serena and also Venus Williams, Yetunde did not play tennis, although she did occasionally work as a personal assistant to her tennis playing sisters.
The Yetunde Price Resource Center was set up in Yetunde’s memory to offer support to victims of violence. Williams’ sells her own clothes, as well as those of her daughter Alexis Olympia, with proceeds going to the Resource Center.
“I think we need to get comfortable with having uncomfortable conversations. Situations are never really gonna get better if you always avoid it, you have to take it head-on.”
