U21 Race to Milan: Denis Shapovalov and Miomir Kecmanovic gain places

The updated U21 Race to Milan list saw no changes in the first four positions, with Stefanos Tsitsipas still leading the charge after the first Masters 1000 event of the season. The 20-year-old Greek lost in the second round at Indian Wells to Felix Auger-Aliassime although he is still almost 1000 points clear of Alex de Minaur who also lost in the second round in the desert, not playing at 100% and skipping Miami Masters to recover and get ready for the clay season. Following a great run in Melbourne when he played in the quarter-final, Frances Tiafoe has lost five of the last six matches on the Tour, staying on 415 points, just five ahead of an 18-year-old Felix Auger-Aliassime

The Canadian grabbed two wins at Indian Wells before a tight loss to Yoshihito Nishioka in the deciding set tie break. Another Canadian Denis Shapovalov took down Steve Johnson and Marin Cilic before Hubert Hurkacz toppled him in the fourth round, leaving Indian Wells with 90 points on the tally and seeking an even better result in Miami. Miomir Kecmanovic entered the second Masters 1000 tournament in a career as a lucky loser, failing to reach the main draw and getting a second chance when Kevin Anderson was forced to withdraw. Miomir took down Maximilian Marterer, Laslo Djere and Yoshihito Nishioka before losing to Milos Raonic, becoming the youngest Indian Wells quarter-finalist since Michael Chang in 1991!

Kecmanovic currently stands on 288 points, nine more than Ugo Humbert who lost in the opening round to Marterer. The Frenchman is the last player who would have qualified for the NextGen Masters directly at the moment, accumulating 45 points more than Casper Ruud who is the last player to pass the 200-point mark. The other players will have to work hard in the following months to make significant changes on the list and it should be interesting to recheck it after Miami, with 1000 points up for grabs in Florida in the next week and a half.
