WTA Indian Wells: Bianca Andreescu destroys Garbine Muguruza in 52 minutes!
The Canadian teenager Bianca Andreeescu has been one of the players to beat in 2019, losing in the final at Auckland as a qualifier and reaching the second round at the Australian Open to gain more big points and cracking the top-100. An 18-year-old from Ontario then went to the USA where she won the 125K Series event at Newport Beach, scoring two wins for Canada in Fed Cup and advancing into the semis in Acapulco where Sofia Kenin halted her after a great battle. With the momentum on her side, Bianca headed to Indian Wells and it is so far so good for the youngster in the desert, demolishing a two-time Grand Slam champion Garbine Muguruza 6-0, 6-1 in 52 minutes to reach her biggest semi-final in a career so far and crack the top-40!
Playing against each other for the first time, Bianca dominated against the Spaniard from start to finish, dropping 12 points on serve to fend off both break points and keep the strings of the match firmly in her hands with a stellar performance on the return. Andreescu stole 66% of the points behind Garbine's initial shot and raced towards the finish line after securing five breaks, firing 16 winners and 12 unforced errors while Muguruza hit only six direct points and almost 30 mistakes to plague her chances.
Bianca needed 23 minutes to wrap up the opener 6-0, holding at love in the opening game and never looking back, clinching the first part of the encounter with a backhand crosscourt winner in game six for a bagel. The Spaniard couldn't do much to end her downfall, suffering a break in the second game of the second set and dropping the opening nine games of the matches against the rival who looked better and better on the court. Bianca blasted a forehand down the line return winner to move 5-1 up and the victory was in her hands after painting another forehand winner in the next game for one of her career-best wins and the place in the semis.
