Stella McCartney Uses Plastic Waste for 2019 Wimbledon Outfits

Tennis - Fashion designer Stella McCartney will be designing her Wimbledon outfit using an environment-friendly theme - a material made from plastic waste intercepted from beaches before reaching the ocean — and with a synthetic fibre made from plastic bottles and old clothes, according to The Evening Standard.

Defending champion Angelique Kerber, 2017 champion Garbine Muguruza and former World No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki will be among the players who will wear the design. McCartney will also design a kit for the men which will be worn by Dominic Thiem, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Zverev. This would mark the first time that McCartney has designed a kit for the men and the women at the same Grand Slam.

The tennis players were happy to help towards a cause that supports the environment. Wozniacki, a Grand Slam winner herself, commented, "I definitely think it’s very important to protect the environment and the planet — the impact is present in every aspect of our lives, including sport.”

Muguruza commented, "I love being outside; breathing, and just feeling the sun and the air. I believe that the better the environment it is around us, the better we feel.”

Austria's Thiem commented, “Environmental issues are a huge problem in our time, and it’s very important that athletes and big companies take steps to take better care of the planet for future generations to come.”

Germany's Alexander Zverev commented, “We train outdoors, we do everything outdoors, so it’s important to protect those spaces for future generations.”
