Andy Roddick reflects on American tennis, praises Serena and Venus Williams
Andy Roddick is the last American to have won a Grand Slam men's singles title back at the 2003 US Open, it means 18 years and a half ago. Speaking on Fox, the 37-year-old, who retired in 2012, said: "It's been too long. My childhood, I was kind of spoiled in the best possible way. If you are in the Stan Smith, Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors and John McEnroe which led into Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi, and then I was able to sneak one in there but as tennis has grown globally it's taking a backseat to some of the other sports here in America which is a little disappointing but we do have a good young group of American men and we also need to specify the women who have been doing their jobs. Serena and Venus Williams, a year and a half ago in the US Open the last four women in the tournament were all American and Serena was not even playing. They have been doing their job, we need to be very clear about that."
Roddick is the husband of famous model Brooklyn Decker and they are parents of two children. "My dad gave me a good first piece of advice when I first got married. He said, I love you, I understand, that will get you about through 95 percent of the situations. Just be patient and remember these words. I think that served me well", he concluded.
Roddick will play an exhibition match in Atlanta on July 22 prior to the ATP 250 event that will be headlined by John Isner.
