Bjorn Borg would have had a good game to face Rafael Nadal, says Connors
How would Rafael Nadal have done against Bjorn Borg on a tennis court? So far the Spaniard won 11 French Opens while the Swede conquered six. In an interview, the eight-time Major winner Ivan Lendl gave an answer. "You cannot compare the generations because of the speed difference, physique difference and so on. But Borg would have had a good game to play Rafa if everything else was being equalized in terms of training methods and so on because of his two handed backhand and it would have been fun to watch", said Lendl.
On the beginning of his career, Lendl added: "We had a great time going into the junior events, I never really enjoyed too much the college events but I went to probably three or four and I still have one playing at Alabama but a very interesting thing that has probably nothing to do with this interview but it's so amazing that I played at a college event in Florida."
On the tough time American tennis is going through, Lendl concluded: "There are many factors for that. I am not in a position to offer cure so I am not going to criticize either. If I want to criticize I have to be able to offer solutions. I think what happened to Australian and American tennis was the boom, in Europe in the past there were no indoor courts and players and juniors played only half a year or eight months and all of a sudden they were able to play the entire time. They had federations behind them, they retained the former players to teach the younger players and you can look at Spain and France as great examples."
