ATP Monte Carlo: Jurgen Melzer and Dominic Thiem bow out of event
Austria's Jurgen Melzer and Dominic Thiem have concluded their Monte Carlo Masters doubles campaign after a round-of-16 loss suffered against second-seeded Lukasz Kubot and Marcelo Melo.
The Austrian wildcard duo had its chances against the 2017 Wimbledon champions but failed to clinch a surprise win as they lost 6-3 6-4.
Kubot and Melo blew three break points in the second game of the match but got the first break of the match in the fourth game to take a 3-1 lead.
Melzer and Thiem saved a set point in the eighth game but that wasn't enough as Kubot and Melo comfortably served out for the opener in the following game.
The Austrians saved three break points in the opening game of the second set but blew three game points in the third game as Kubot and Melo broke to take a 2-1 lead.
Melzer and Thiem kept their focus as they broke back the No. 2 seeds in the sixth game to make it all tied at 3-3 but got broken once again immediately in the following game after blowing two game points.
Kubot and Melo then made no mistake on their serve as they held on to their serve to clinch a win after an hour and six minutes of play.
Kubot and Melo won 76 percent of their first serve points, converted 3-of-11 of their break point chances and saved 1-of-2 of Melzer and Thiem's break point opportunities.
They play next against No. 7 seeds Nikola Mektic and Franko Skugor.
Meanwhile, it wasn't a great day at the office for 2018 French Open runner-up Thiem, who earlier on Thursday also suffered a surprise straight-set defeat against Serb Dusan Lajovic in the singles round-of-16.
